Cork based club 021Racing report the Mallow DH track to be in a very dangerous state following some recent tree felling in the forest. Large trees have been cut and lie across the track every 15m – leaving the track un-ride able at this time!
Mallow DH tracks aka Mt.Hilary forest was conceived by Greg O’Keeffe and took many years and many man hours to perfect it into the track that it is today. Its loved by all who rode it and gave 021Racing many hours of full-on fast DH fun, but with its wide trail and well manicured surroundings it was very safe and posed no threat to any innocent locals who where out walking. The Mallow track is still the longest in the country and is a great natural DH spot. It’s ride-able by everybody and challenges all from the novice all the way up to the elites. The track boasts the no pedal rule, like the many chainless races in the Welsh dragon series where you don’t need to pedal to get from top to bottom, a true DH track!!
The track has been a successful as a race destination because of the large parking area and the superb network of fire-roads, these help for uplifts which don’t cross the track at any stage and provide great access for ambulances and first aid. It has held the National Championships and four rounds of the DH NPS. More recently it held round 4 of the 2006 DH NPS, which was a great success. The track once again praised and the relationship between club reps and local Coillte staff was ok. Club representative state that they have got on very well with all locals and other forest users including the horse riding community and have not received any complaints, more so praised for building the track as it has become a good local amenity. The destruction of the track is a great pity and further strengthens the need for acceptance of this growing and popular sport in the region by Coillte and recognition of the popular trails. It further highlights the real need for improved planning and dialogue between Coillte staff and MB Clubs not just in Cork but all over the country.
